Can My Teen Get an Apprenticeship Without GCSEs?

Your teen wants an apprenticeship but doesn’t have GCSE Maths and English. Can they still get one?

Technically, some apprenticeships accept applicants without GCSEs. But realistically, most require at least a grade 4 in Maths and English — or equivalent.

That “or equivalent” is where Functional Skills comes in.

What apprenticeships actually require

Intermediate apprenticeships (Level 2): Usually require Functional Skills Level 1 or equivalent as a minimum. Some accept Entry Level 3 with the expectation you’ll achieve Level 1 during the apprenticeship.

Advanced apprenticeships (Level 3): Almost all require Functional Skills Level 2 (GCSE equivalent) in Maths and English. No way around this one.

Higher and degree apprenticeships (Level 4+): Level 2 Maths and English is a non-negotiable baseline. Some require higher.

Even for Level 2 apprenticeships that don’t strictly require GCSEs, your teen will need to achieve Functional Skills Level 1 or 2 during the programme. It’s built into the apprenticeship framework. So they’ll have to do it eventually.

The smart move

Get the qualification before applying. Here’s why:

Employers get dozens of applications. If two candidates are equal but one already has their Maths and English sorted, that’s the one getting the interview. Having the qualification removes a question mark.

It also shows initiative. Your teen studied independently and passed an exam. That tells an employer more about work ethic than any cover letter.

How long does it take?

If your teen is starting from scratch, Entry Level 3 to Level 2 might take 3-4 months with consistent practice. If they’ve got the basics and just need Level 2, 6-8 weeks is realistic.

Either way, it’s faster than waiting for the next GCSE exam cycle (which only happens once a year in May/June).

Functional Skills Level 2 = GCSE grade 4

This is the key fact. Functional Skills Level 2 is officially equivalent to a GCSE grade 4. It ticks the same box on every application form.

Your teen can study at home. No classroom, no teacher. They book the exam when they’re ready — exams run all year, not just in summer. They can even take it at home via webcam.

Step 3: Let them practice for 20 minutes a day. In 4-8 weeks, they’ll be ready to book the exam.

The apprenticeship they want is on the other side of one exam. That’s it.
