If your teen is home educated — whether by choice or because school didn’t work out — the qualifications question comes up fast.
Can they get real, recognised qualifications without being in a school? Yes. And it’s simpler than most people think.
The options
GCSEs as a private candidate. Your teen can sit GCSEs at a test centre without being enrolled in a school. The catch: it’s expensive (£100-200 per subject), you need to find a centre that accepts private candidates, and the exams only happen in May/June.
Functional Skills. This is the route most home educating families don’t know about — and the one that usually makes most sense. Your teen can take Functional Skills exams any time, at a test centre or from home. Level 2 is GCSE equivalent. Exam fees are £50-150.
IGCSEs. International GCSEs can be taken by private candidates. Some families go this route, but it requires a lot of independent study and exam fees add up.
For most home educated teens who need Maths and English qualifications, Functional Skills is the most practical, affordable, and flexible option.
Why Functional Skills works for home education
No enrolment required. Your teen doesn’t need to join a course or register with a school.
Exams run year-round. Not locked to the May/June GCSE timetable.
Can be taken at home. Online, invigilated exams mean no travel to a test centre (though that option exists too).
Study materials are self-contained. Your teen can prepare independently with the right resources.
Recognised by employers and colleges. Level 2 = GCSE grade 4. Same doors open.
What the study looks like
Functional Skills content is practical. Not abstract algebra. Not Shakespearean analysis. Real-world maths and English:
Reading a lease agreement and understanding the terms. Writing a professional email. Working out a percentage discount. Interpreting data from a chart.
For home educated teens who learn better through practical application, this format clicks in a way that GCSE textbooks sometimes don’t.
How to prepare
The exam has its own format and question style. Past papers and mock exams are the best preparation because they show your teen exactly what to expect.
Our prep packs are built for this. Each level (Entry Level 3, Level 1, Level 2) in each subject (Maths, English) includes 5 mock tests, a 200-question workbook, a study guide, and answer booklets with full explanations.
Your teen works through the material at their own pace. The mock tests mark themselves. When they’re consistently passing, they book the real exam.
Not sure where to start?
Our free course covers the basics — what Functional Skills are, how the exams work, and how to set up a realistic study routine at home. It’s made for parents, not teens. Takes about an hour to work through.
